As part of the MBA in Community Economic Development (CED) I've been taking, I get to go to Cuba for a course on Public Policy. I am grateful for the trip, but have to say, I'm not looking forward to the actual travel part...I drive to Saskatoon, and then fly to Edmonton, then to Toronto, then to Santa Clara. I leave today...and I arrive tomorrow afternoon. Still, I shall not complain! I doubt I would generate a whole bunch of sympathy. All the extra travel time means I get to arrive somewhat prepared. I read well in airports.
Learning a second language is really hard...I've been working on Spanish for a month, and so far have hit 2% fluency. Maybe by this time next year, I will have a better grasp of the language, but for now, I'm happy that I'm working with people who are bilingual. My presentation partner is originally from Peru, currently living in Toronto. Her name is Romy and I'm looking forward to meeting her in person. We connected on the phone to scope out her project and it was an instant rapport. The best part of this whole going back to school at 50 thing has been the people I've met. The world views are so different! It is really tough to divide your world into 'us' vs. 'them' when you've met 'them' and they are fantastic.
Anyway, off to pack and get in the car, and off to Saskatoon.
