San Ramon police disqualify applicant who resigned from BART force

SAN RAMON — After learning of an internal-affairs investigation by BART police into an officer who resigned his position Monday, San Ramon police disqualified him after learning of his application to join their department, authorities said.In a statement last Thursday, BART said its police department was looking into allegations about the officer after a video allegedly captured him off-duty using “racist and abhorrent language.” After investigators with the department’s internal affairs division obtained and watched the video May 9, the officer was placed on leave.“The language in the video is deeply offensive and has no place at the BART Police Department,” interim Police Chief Kevin Franklin said in that statement, which noted that the BART Police Citizen Review Board and the department’s Office of the Independent Police Auditor watch over such department internal investigations.“It does not reflect our values as individuals or as a...

Baby struck by shrapnel during attempted robbery in Oakland

(KRON) -- A 15-month-old baby was struck by shrapnel in a stroller during an attempted robbery in Oakland Tuesday morning, according to the Oakland Police Department. The incident happened on the 800 block Trestle Glen Road just before 11 a.m. The baby was being pushed in a stroller by a grandmother when two men attempted to rob the grandmother at gunpoint, police said. Neighbor Laurie Johnson said she raced outside after hearing the grandmother's screams. "I heard a woman screaming, I saw she had a stroller. I saw the criminals leaving and tried to comfort her," Johnson told KRON4. (KRON) -- One of the most unaffordable places to live in America, Silicon Valley, is slated to build new affordable housing units after a vote by the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors.Supervisors on Tuesday approved $31.1 million in funding for three projects that will create 201 affordable housing units in Mountain View, San Jose, and Santa Clara.The three new developments approved Tuesday include: 1265 Montecito Ave. in Mountain View (85 rental units)Civic Center Multifamily Affordable Housing Development in Santa Clara (108 rental units)4th and Reed in San JoseVulnerable residents are struggling with the region’s housing crunch and soaring rent prices.
